Did the Mean Nurse Hurt You???

Payton before the finger prick
So Payton’s 9 month check-up wasn’t as wonderful as some check-ups in the past. We usually love going to them, as it’s amazing to hear the progress she’s made and how much she’s grown. However, today was a MAJOR let down.

Like usual, I checked Payton in at the receptionist desk. This time, they asked me to fill out a 5-pg questionnaire about Payton. (some 9 month thing). Some questions were a little odd – i.e., Does your child push their arm through a sleeve when getting dressed? Can your child pick up a string? Etc. I’m sure they’re all very valid questions, but the annoyance of a little boy coughing who was sitting next to Payton was driving me CRAZY!

After Payton’s name was called we walked into an empty examining room to wait for Dr. Bockhorn. In the meantime, a nurse took all of Payton’s measurements. She’s now 18 lbs. 14 oz. 29 ½ inches long! Shockingly, Payton is in the 75% - 90% length wise! From what I understand, this doesn’t mean much as the best time to gage height is between 1-2 years of age.

Anyway…next, walked in Dr. Bockhorn. She was prepared to test Payton’s mobile/social skills, but when Dr. Bockhorn walked in the room and Payton immediately started waving/clapping Dr. Bockhorn said Payton’s social skills were “off the charts!” LOL. On the other hand, since Payton wasn’t able to go from the sitting position to standing (by holding onto an object – i.e., table) she’s a step behind mobility-wise. I’m not concerned, as I know Payton will do things at her own time!

After the testing, Dr. Bockhorn requested Payton get her last flu shot (as babies under 12 months need 2) and a finger prick to test to see if she’s anemic. A different nurse from earlier walked into our room and gave Payton her flu shot. Payton didn’t even cry. Next, the finger prick (which I thought would have been the less problematic of the two), Payton SCREAMED – “MAMA”!!! Tears started streaming down her face. It was the SO sad!!! It’s the most upset I’ve EVER seen Payton - NO LIE! As many of you know, Payton isn’t even close to being as over dramatic as her me, so her reaction COMPLETELY through me off guard!

Ok, so here’s the worse part of it all…it wasn’t that Payton was upset/crying (although I HATED it), but her finger bled for 2.5 hours after the prick! It was so odd. For some reason it wasn’t clotting. I didn’t know what to do. After several conversations with Tammy and the phone nurse I was getting more and more irate! I really think the nurse who pricked Payton either went too deep and/or pricked her too hard. I'm pissed!!!
